Spicy Maple Syrup Ketchup

It’s hard to believe this Spicy Maple Syrup Ketchup is homemade. If you are looking to get away from corn syrup in your ketchup your going to love this new version of ketchup. Trust me you will put it on everything.
When making this homemade condiment don’t be alarmed about using a whole can of tomato paste. The flavor really balances out in the end and the texture becomes much smoother after adding the maple syrup. The maple syrup is a great complement to the tomato paste because it cuts the acidity of the tomatoes. I know that the corn syrup in store bought ketchup can over power your food with sugar. Who needs more harsh sugars! At least when making it yourself you can monitor the amount you use.
When choosing a hot sauce to put in the Spicy Maple Syrup Ketchup recipe use one that you know. That way you don’t make it too over powering in heat. I chose a hot sauce from Trader Joes called Jalapeno Pepper Hot Sauce. It has just the right amount of heat for us. Plus this hot sauce doesn’t have a strong vinegar taste like some do. It’s a little on the thick side as well. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it on other foods.
When adding the spices just know that the garlic powder is optional and so is the cayenne pepper. I know that some people are sensitive to these. The nutmeg and cinnamon can also be brought down to 1 dash instead of 2 dashes each. Depending on whether or not you are sensitive to these types of spices. I prefer 2 dashes of each of these spices. It really gives a signature flavor to this unusual ketchup. I hope you enjoy this Spicy Maple Syrup Ketchup recipe as much as we do.
