A Little History Of Electrolyte Drinks

We really don’t think much of where drinks like electrolyte or sports drinks first came from. So heres a little info on the beginning of it’s discovery and use.

The first electrolyte drink “Lucozade” was created in 1927 by a chemist named William Owen in the U.K. decades before anyone else figured it out. It initially was created to help keep people healthy as a good source of calories. The glucose and water mixture gave people the energy they needed to get better. The drink was known as “Glucozade,” until Owen changed the name in 1929.

Owen’s Glucozade was bought by a company called Beecham Group in 1938 that merged with SmithKline in 1989. The name of the healthy drink was renamed back to Lucozade. It wasn’t until the mid-1980’s that the company realized that it could sell it as a sports drink to replenish energy.

In the mean time back in the University of Florida labs in the United States. A group of scientists led by Robert Cade invented Gatorade on October 2, 1965. It was named after the Gators mascot name at Florida University. It too took off and became a phenomenon in sports drink. Like Lucozade, Gatorade created new flavors and the millions poured in.

Today Lucozade is the number 1 sports drink in the U.K. In the USA Gatorade was bought by PepsiCo in 2010 and competes with Coca-Cola’s Powerade and Vitaminwater worldwide. This includes it’s competition with Lucozade.

I say lets try making our own electrolyte drinks. They can taste so much better then store bought and bypass being in harmful plastic containers. Help yourself and the environment. What To Buy To Make A Quick Pina Colada Electrolyte Drink

I truly believe in quality when it comes to making anything. I really love fresh limes in this drink. It make a world of difference. Although if you don’t have fresh bottled real lime juice will do.

It can be a challenge to find organic pineapple juice, but if you can’t find it make sure it is not from concentrate. The ultimate would be to use fresh pineapple but that would leave a lot of pulp for this drink. We want an electrolyte drink to be easy to absorb and get strait into the system.

As for the coconut water try to find a good quality one. I like the Kirkland organic brand from Costco. I can buy a box of them and it’s very affordable. Perfect for the hot summer go to for this drink.

The salt is very important because you need a salt that has a lot of minerals. Celtic Salt or Pink Himalayan Salt is the best. If you don’t have these then use sea salt. I doesn’t have as many minerals but in a pinch it will due.
