This Orange Lemon Vegan Sauce can be used in so many dishes. It is so versatile and full of citrus flavor that you will be finding ways to incorporate it into your favorite desserts and meals. This is a must add to your repertoire of sauces that the whole family will love.

I found this recipe a long time ago in a turn of the century cookbook. I changed and modified it to my liking to make it vegan. Instead of using regular fresh squeezed orange juice I used concentrated organic orange juice. I found that it gives the best flavor intensity. When using regular fresh squeezed orange juice I found that it was more of a mild taste. I like to taste my flavors so the concentrated orange juice works best in my recipes. Although, each to their own. See what works best for you. It’s all an option.

The grated zest of a fresh organic orange is key to this sauce as well. It just helps pop the citrus flavor. Above all make sure the orange for zest and lemon juice are very fresh, this also adds to the vibrancy of taste. An old lemon can start to get flat in taste and extra sweet when over ripe.

The sweetener used can be to your preference of sweetener. I used coconut sugar, but I think agave would work just as well. If you are looking for more of a bright orange color the coconut sugar makes the sauce a little darker. Then I would use a light colored agave or monk fruit sweetener to brighten the color.

This sauce has such a tang and a zip to it. It is bound to liven up most and add on to your recipes. Plus it is so easy and inexpensive to make. Can last up to two weeks in a sealed glass container.

  • Medium sauce pan


  • ½ cup Organic Orange Juice Concentrate
  • ½ cup Cold Water
  • 1 Tbsp Cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 2 tsp Grated Fresh Orange Rind
  • 2 Tbsp Vegan Butter
  • ½ Tsp Vanilla Flavoring


  • In a small bowl mix the cold water and cornstarch together. Mix until dissolved together. Pour into a medium sauce pan.
  • Add all of the remaining ingredients and stir together under medium low heat. Stir until thickened. Remove from heat and pour into a glass container. Let cool completely before putting in the refrigerator of on salads.
