A Little Jackfruit History

Most people think jackfruit is a new fruit, but to the surprise of many it has been around in India for 3,000 to 6,000 years. Jackfruit is marveled and sought after as a staple food being that one jackfruit can weigh over 100 pounds and feeds many. When harvested as a greener fruit it is ideal to use as a mimic of a shredded meat substitute. As a ripe fruit it is much sweeter comparing to the combination taste of apple, pineapple, mango and banana. Sounds delicious to me!

This large fruit is of the Moraceae plant family, which is mulberry, fig and breadfruit. Strangely, because these fruits don’t nearly get as large as the jackfruit.

Unlike most fruit trees the jackfruit tree can live up to 100 years and produce 30 to 60 years of fruit. The older the tree is, it is known to bear up to 500 fruits in one year. Unfortunately, the tree produces a lot of food, but it does not ship well being that it parishes fast. Leaving modern day canning as our way of getting jackfruit on the other side of the planet. This all leaves it as a higher price by the can.

In most cultures the jackfruit is regarded as ethical living and of spiritual values. Being that it is a fruit of giant size it is seen as “abundance, prosperity and sustainability “. So it is known as a food of sharing and coming together as a collective. Helping grow as a cultural and ecological contributor to maintaining community. If only we could all grow jackfruit in our countries for these beautiful values.

Although, we can make this recipe of Inexpensive Sriracha BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches to come together with our friends and family that I have made for you. Jackfruit is a wonderful meat substitute for this dish. I hope you like it!

How To Make Homemade Sriracha BBQ Sauce For Jackfruit Sandwiches

I love how homemade BBQ sauce taste because of all the fresh ingredients. In this recipe I use fresh garlic and it makes such a big difference in the taste. I especially like using organic Trader Joe’s ketchup as well. It uses organic cane sugar instead or corn syrup. It’s not as sweet tasting as most ketchup. It’s a very balanced pleasant taste.

I but all of my ingredients into a bowl and mix it with a fork. That works fine for me. Some people like to put it in the food processor, but I like the small chunks of minced garlic.

For the video I made a single batch of sriracha BBQ sauce. Ideally, if you want more of a saucy spill over the bun type of jackfruit sandwich then make a double batch. This recipe only makes enough for four sandwiches with no sauce leftover. It’s so good! You’ll want more!

If you have your own favorite BBQ sauce and want to add sriracha sauce to it, just add 1 tablespoon to 1 cup of BBQ sauce. Mix it all together well and use this instead of making your own.

How To Make Cilantro And Lime Green Cabbage Slaw For Jackfruit Sandwiches

This is one of the easiest green cabbage slaws to make. Slice the green cabbage in a food processor (I use Hamilton Beach Food Processor) or slice it with a large sharp knife by hand. Put it in a bowl with chopped cilantro, fresh lime, olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. Follow the amount to use in recipe below.

Mix this all together and set aside until it’s time to assemble the sandwiches. This recipe can easily be doubled. If you like a bit of crunch to your sandwich then make a double batch.

How To Clean And Core Jackfruit

For this recipe you will need a 20oz. or 14oz. can of green jackfruit. This only means that it is not ripe yet and hasn’t become sweet. It might be in a brine so rinse it out under fresh water in a sieve. Then separate the hard core from the stringy parts of the jackfruit. You can see that in the picture below.

This is a photo of a hand holding a piece of jackfruit with core intact with a bowl of jackfruit behind the hand.

After coring the jackfruit pull it apart into stringy bits. It will look like stringy shredded meat. That is how it is supposed to look. This is what you will be adding to your recipe.

How To Make The Inexpensive Sriracha BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches

Why do I call these inexpensive jackfruit sandwiches? Jackfruit can be about $5.00 a can and this recipe calls for 1 can of jackfruit and 1/2 cup of mashed chickpeas. This is cheaper and taste just as great! When the jackfruit and chickpeas are cooked in the sriracha BBQ sauce it all picks up the flavor of the sauce.

Another item in this recipe that mimics the texture of the jackfruit is one yellow onion sliced into strips. These onions are the first to cook down in a skillet with olive oil to soften. Then the jackfruit, mashed chickpeas and sriracha BBQ sauce are added. Cover and simmer this mixture down on low for 20 minutes. Stir every 5 minutes and recover.

When this is finished simmering it is ready to serve. Serve on your favorite burger bun. I like mine toasted.

How To Assemble Sriracha BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches

When constructing these yummy sandwiches I like to add a little of the leftover sriracha BBQ sauce to each side of the burger bun. Some people like to add mustard. I’ll leave that part to each their own. After that I like to start all the crunchy crispy veggies and pickles at the bottom of the sandwich. I find it hold together better with the jackfruit mixture at the top because it gets a little wobbly.

I start by layer the pickles ( I like long sliced sandwich size dill pickles). I place these long sliced pickles crisscrossed over each other because it fills the bun. Then I add the cilantro lime green cabbage slaw. Top that with the hot cooked sriracha BBQ jackfruit mixture and add the top of the bun and bam, theres your sandwich. It’s so good!

Add this sriracha BBQ jackfruit mixture to other dishes. I like it on a bed of greens with the cilantro lime green slaw and crunchy chunky roasted peanuts with salt added to the top. I hope you enjoy these Inexpensive Sriracha BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches as much as we do. Enjoy!

  • 1/4 cup Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 3 to 4 cloves Garlic, minced small
  • 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar or Coconut Sugar
  • 1 tsp Dijon Mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin
  • Cilantro Lime Green Cabbage Slaw
  • 3 cups Green Cabbage, shredded
  • 1/3 cup Cilantro, chopped
  • 1 sliced Green Onion
  • 1 Tbsp Lime, fresh
  • 1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Fresh ground Black Pepper and Sea Salt, to taste
  • Jackfruit Mixture
  • 2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 (20-ounce) OR (14-ounce) can Unripe jackfruit or called Green Jackfruit, drained and rinsed in cool water
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 of BBQ Sauce and 1/2 again of rest of BBQ Sauce, at the end in instructions.

Instructions

Inexpensive Sriracha BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches

  1. Make the sriracha BBQ sauce: In a small bowl add all of the ingredients to make the homemade sriracha BBQ sauce. Double the amount of sriracha BBQ sauce if you want to add extra BBQ sauce to the hamburger buns. Mix together well with a spoon or fork. Set aside. NOTE: If you have your own BBQ sauce and want to add sriracha sauce to it just add 1 Tablespoon of sriracha sauce to a cup of BBQ sauce mix well.
  2. Open the can of jackfruit and rinse it under cool water. Cut the core of the jackfruit off of the fruit and shred the remaining fruit that comes off the core. Set the shredded jackfruit aside.
  3. Drain the chickpeas and pinch the skins off if desired. Having the skins off helps with better digestion of the chickpeas. In a medium sized flat bowl mash the chickpeas with the back of a fork. Set aside.
  4. On a cutting board shred a cleaned green cabbage with a sharp knife ( I use Ninja Knives for this)by cutting it into thin slices. Or use a food processor ( I use a Hamilton Beach Food Processor) Put it in a large serving size bowl. Add all the ingredients for the green cabbage slaw and toss together well so that it is coated with the olive oil and lime juice. Cover and put in the refrigerator to mingle flavors until its time to assemble the sandwiches.
  5. Heat a large skillet on medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Add the sliced yellow onion and salt to the hot skillet. Sauté the onions and salt stirring so not to burn for about 8 minutes or until soft. You may have to lower the heat if it starts to brown.
  6. After the onions are softened and sautéed add the shredded jackfruit, mashed chickpeas, half of the sriracha BBQ sauce and water. Stir together, turn heat between medium low and low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir after 10 minutes and cover to continue simmering.
  7. When done add the rest of the sriracha BBQ sauce and turn up the heat to medium high. Stir constantly until the liquid has cooked off a little. This should only take about 2 minutes. When done add the jackfruit mixture into a large bowl.
  8. Put all of your premade green cabbage slaw, pickles and jackfruit mixture out to assemble your sandwiches.
  9. Toast your buns if desired. If you made extra sriracha BBQ sauce add it to your hamburger buns. Add the sliced pickles on the bottom then the cilantro lime green cabbage slaw then top it with the cooked hot sriracha BBQ jackfruit mixture. Top it with the top bun and there’s your sandwich!
  10. Enjoy!

Notes

Cover in a container and good for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

You can reheat in microwave or stovetop.

If using stovetop to reheat: Sauté on medium heat for 4 to 6 minutes. If it is too dry add a tablespoon of water while heating.
