A Little History On Pie Crust
Pie can go back as far as the Ancient Egyptians creating the first dish of a pie similar to what we know pie to be. Then it is believed that in the 5th Century BC the Ancient Greeks invented pie pastry. It was known in this era that one could become a pastry chef, which was a separate trade then to a baker. The pastry made by the Greek pastry chefs were of fat, flour and water mixed together. This was the beginning of the pastry dough we know of today.

Coming a little closer in time we can look at the colonist that came to the Americas. They were especially keen on cooking pies. Pies acted as a way to preserve food and to keep fillings fresh during long winter months.

Hence today millions of pies are eaten in a year. In fact over 50 million pumpkin pies alone are baked every year. With apple pie being the most popular pie of all time. So , that is a lot of pie!

Enjoying any pie in the moment is the favorite pie. Right?

Choosing The Right Oatmeal For Gluten Free Oats
When making anything with gluten free oatmeal you have to make sure it is truly gluten free. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will consider oats to be gluten free when it is under its gluten-free labeling regulations. They strictly request that packaged oats contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten inclusive.

The risk of gluten is caused by cross contact from other glutinous grains. Oats without a gluten-free label are not considered gluten-free and are not safe for people who have celiac disease.
Special oats that are gluten-free are grown and processed in such a way that it keeps them safe and away from other grains that have gluten. These oats are expectable as being safe for people with celiac disease. Like this wonderful sprouted gluten free oat brand below that I get at Costco.

Some companies have started a process of mechanically cleaning the oats they harvest. This practice is allowed by the FDA. Although, there is a debate whether this is safe or not. It is questionable if it should be consumed by people with celiac disease. Being that oats are naturally gluten-free it is problematic for a small group of people with serious celiac disease to still react to these.
Researchers have found that a protein in oats called avenin can trigger even the smallest response to gluten. This is considered a separate sensitivity because this is protein. Although, it activates the same immune cells that also react to gluten. If you do have a sensitivity to avenin then please avoid all oat products.
How To Make Gluten Free Oatmeal Pie Crust
This oatmeal pie crust is so simple to make. First preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Then I use my large food processor ( Hamilton Beach Food Processor) and add all the dry ingredients. Then process it for 15 seconds. This breaks up the oatmeal and makes it more like a corse oat flour. Pulse the dry ingredients about 3 to 4 more times to get it the right consistency. It should look as if all the oats have been broken into smaller bits.

When that is done add the wet ingredients to the food processor. Pulse about 3 to 4 more times to create a sticky ball like and uniformity in wetness. If it is too dry add a little more melted vegan butter.
How To Form Gluten Free Oatmeal Pie Crust Into A Pie Dish
Put the oatmeal pie crust mixture into a 9-inch pie dish. Push all the mixture to the center of the dish. Press the crust starting from the center outward using your fingers to press it. Try to get an even amount on the sides. You can use the back of a wooden spoon to help press the crust outward or the bottom of a glass.

When you get to the sides try to make the crust come up the sides to about a half inch to the top. Some pie dishes have a rim that indents in the glass. Try to come up to that half inch from the top line because this will be about were pie filling will come up to. Try to keep the crust about a half inch or less thick. You can flatten the crust on the rim with your finger because this will make it even.
Put in the oven for 16 to 19 minutes. Watch closely so as not to burn. It will be a light golden brown when done. The middle may bubble up and stay there. When it comes out of the oven just push it back down with the back of the spoon.
I hope you like this Gluten Free oatmeal Pie crust as much as we do. Enjoy!
