A Little History On Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes

Why are these beautifully colored heirloom tomatoes called heirloom? Well first things first. They are not genetically modified and are non-hybrid, open-pollinated cultivars of the nightshade genus. Cultivars are strains or varieties of plants that are specifically chosen, pruned throughout generations for desireable traits. They are not grafted or crossbred with any other tomato varieties. They are a purer strain of fruit.

To be an heirloom tomato the original plant that germinated birth to generations of seeds have to be traceable all the way back to 1951. Although, many of the varieties of heirloom tomatoes that we love today can be traced back to more than 100 years ago.

The history of it’s origins goes back to Mexico and Central America and known to have been cultivated by the Incas and Aztecs in 700 AD. Later it was introduced by the conquistadors to Spain, Portugal and Italy in the 16th century. Hence to our love of eating and gardening tomatoes today. It’s a wonder to how it has been cultivated and grown throughout the world.

Being that as it may, heirloom tomatoes are more on the delicate side and much harder to grow. They are more susceptible to diseases and rot and wither and die after the first frost of the year. They are also only pollinated by insects and the seeds are hand picked to further carry on the purity of the tomato. This is the old fashion way but this is how it continues to come back year after year.

So try some heirloom tomatoes and see the difference in taste. It has been worth the effort to save these gems in their purest form.

Nutritional Value Of Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes

Not only are heirloom tomatoes less seedy, more flavorful and sweeter then traditional store bought cherry tomatoes. They are pumped full of nutrients such as potassium, vitamin B6, niacin, folate, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid and the powerful cancer fighting antioxidant called lycopene.

Heirloom tomatoes are picked when they are really rip and have a high amount of nutrients that are readily available. Perfect choice to pick when you see them, nab them up. They are truly delicious!

First of all just wash the cherry tomatoes under cool water and place them on a kitchen towel to dry. Cut the heirloom cherry tomatoes in half to make them bite size. If they are big then cut them into thirds or quarters. If they are too small then leave them be and don’t cut them.

Then clean the green onions and parsley. Pat them dry with a towel before cutting. Slice the green onions (I use two decent size green onions) into thin slices, not too large. Chop the red onion into small pieces. Then chop the parsley (I use about 1/3 of a cup)

Other Items To Add To Your Effortless Heirloom Cherry Tomato Salad

When making this yummy summer time salad there are other vegetables to put into it. As you can see in the photos to this blog post I arranged the salad over a bed of spinach. Although, you can use any salad greens for this. Plus, I added fresh avocado, but you can also add fresh cucumber and top it off with some sunflower seeds or hemp seeds. I added parsley to this dish but you can also include fresh basil or cilantro.

The vegan feta really gives that extra Mediterranean flair but you can add any vegan cheese that you like. I really like this Violife brand of vegan feta cheese. It’s really good!
