A Little History On French Dressing

French Dressing is very much incognito. It is not even from France! Surprised right? I was!

A company called ‘Malani‘ invented the delicious dressing in the late 19th or early 20th century in the United States. Not much later in 1925 Kraft food company quickly bought out Malani and marketed it with a “French” dressing label.

This reddish orange salad topper was a big hit with Kraft making it the very first pourable dressing flavor. It was as American as dressing could get. This so called French title actually came from Pittsburgh and is not a known namesake as a European food creation favorite.

Today, weirdly enough the Food and Drug Administration has announced that it would no longer regulate standards for French dressing, being that it is not the standard ingredients for French dressing. As it is well known that real French dressings are a variety of vinaigrettes. These vinaigrettes being made from real French recipes of oil and vinegars. The rule being that the vinaigrette be made with 35% vegetable oil and with certain “acidifying ingredients” like vinegar and citric acid.

Some people ask what is the difference between French dressing and Catalina? French dressing is thicker, creamier and contains garlic, paprika and more oil and lighter in color. Where Catalina has a high amount of ketchup creating a deeper red color. Catalina also rarely has garlic or paprika in it.

How To Make Easy Homemade Creamy Vegan French Dressing

If you are thinking of making a tangy sweet dressing this is the dressing to make. It goes so well with any green vegetable, carrot, cauliflower or even peppers. I’m sure you will put it on everything like I do. I was brought up eating this dressing as a child and still love it.

To start you off you want to have a good blender (I use a Ninja BL770 Mega Kitchen System). I use my Ninja smoothie blender and the amount works just fine. Put all of your ingredients into the blender and blend until creamy. (I have to take it off and shake the mixture back and forth vigorously and put it back on the blender because it gets so thick). You may have to do the same in a large blender and scrape down the sides every so often.

Taste the blended French dressing and see if it needs anything extra for flavorings. Some people like more brown sugar (or coconut sugar). You can even use maple syrup or agave sweetener to substitute as well. Although it will come out a little runnier.

If you need it to be a little saltier add 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of extra white miso or extra salt. Add it slowly and blend again and taste it so as not to add too much.

If you don’t have paprika you can use sweet paprika for this recipe. They both work really well.

How To Make Easy Homemade Creamy Vegan French Dressing Thicker For Dipping

French dressing is already a little on the thick side, but I’ve come up with a way to make it extra thick.

I use 1 extra tablespoon of vegan mayonnaise and whip that up in the blender. If you find that that is not enough you can use a 1/2 tablespoon of hemp seeds. You can even use more like 1 to 2 full tablespoons if you used a liquid sweetener like maple syrup or agave sweetener to substitute for the sweetener. Add it slowly as to not make it too thick. Hemp seeds have a way of sneaking up on you with becoming thick very fast when blended up. So blend it up a little at a time and check it’s consistency.

I have just used the hemp seeds and not the extra vegan mayonnaise before and it worked fine. It’s all on your preference on what you have and what you want to use. Just add these extras slowly!

This is one of my favorite salad dressings and dips. I hope you love this recipe as much as we do. Enjoy!

Instructions

Easy Homemade Creamy Vegan French Dressing

  1. Put all of your ingredients into a smoothie blender ( I use the Ninja BL770 Mega Kitchen System). You can also use a regular blender but you will have to scrape down the sides often. Blend until smooth and thick. I have to take the smoothie blender off of the Ninja machine and shack it vigorously then place it back on and blend again. It can get that thick! You can add 1/2 tablespoon of water at a time to make it less thick.
  2. Taste to see if it needs any extra salt, brown sugar or ketchup or anything to make it to your liking.
  3. Add extra mayo or hemp seeds in the recipe ingredients to make it thicker if you are using it for a dip. If you used maple syrup or agave sweetener you may need to add extra hemp seeds or mayo to make it thicker.
  4. Add hemp seeds and extra vegan mayonnaise slowly to get the right consistency you are looking for.
  5. Enjoy!
