A Little History On Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional Yeast is no stranger to time. It goes back as far as being used by the Egyptians. Or! Maybe better known today as “nooch” or “hippie dust” or some call it “yeshi“. Regardless it has been around for awhile and called many names and used as a supplement, condiment and ingredient.

What is it? Nutritional yeast is a single cell organism call Saccharomyces Cerevisiae.

Where do you find that? It is grown surprisingly on molasses maintaining a pH temperature and then harvested, washed and heat-dried. Heat-drying it deactivates it making it different then yeast used for making bread, beer and wine.

Professional nutritional yeast makers make Saccharomyces Cerevisiae yeast under sterile conditions in a laboratory before it can be cultivated. These producers securely store them in sub-zero temperatures to stop them from mixing with other microorganisms that can contaminate them. This is done because yeast flows freely though the air. This is how sourdough starter can grow when left on the counter over time. Pretty amazing how yeast in the environment that settles on your mixture of flour and water can start growing and fermenting.

Nutritional Facts On Nutritional Yeast And How It Gets Turned Into Flakes

Most people know that fallow a plant based diet that nutritional yeast is somewhat high in protein, fiber and B vitamins, particularly B12. We need vitamin B12 in order to survive. It helps to keep the body’s blood and nerve cells very healthy. It also helps to make DNA, helps with complications with infections or bleeding, and important for blood metabolism. So hence, nutritional yeast is added along with minerals. This is added during the production process. (not all nutritional yeast is B12 fortified so check to make sure before buying).

After it is fortified then the final step of making the nutritional yeast is to dry out the yeast. It is first dried by spinning the yeast and then rolling it out. This is then collected to what we see as flakes when we sprinkle it out onto our favorite foods. Making our culinary adventures truly delicious!

Extra Spices You Can Use To Make Homemade Bouillon Powder

When I make this Easy Homemade Bouillon Powder I make it to my liking. I have experimented with other variations and they are quite good. Although, I am very fond of this recipe and I’ve been making it for years (I did research Old Bay Seasoning that I use in this recipe and it is vegan to my knowledge).

However, there are other herbs and spices that can be used to alter the flavoring of your bouillon powder. Play around with it and see what you come up with. I advise making your experiments in little doses in case you don’t like them. Just remember to write down your amounts in case you come up with something amazing. Have fun!

How To Make Easy Homemade Bouillon Powder

Mixing spices can be so much fun. Using a nutritional yeast base makes it easy to work with. It is hard to really mess this up.

I first measure out all my spices and then mix them all together.

You can do this by putting the herbs and spices from the recipe in a jar and shake it up to make sure it is all mixed together well.

You can use the bouillon powder from here, but I often put it in a food processor. I made a half batch recipe for this blog so I used a small food processor but I usually use a large one for a full batch. (I use Hamilton Beach Food Processor) or I put it in the blender (I use Ninja BL770 Mega Kitchen System). If you choose to use the blender just make sure all the dust from the mixed spices and nutritional yeast have settled before opening the lid. It can be very messy if you open it to soon. I know from experience. Ha!

This helps to blend the mixture into a powder form even more. I really love the outcome of blending it this way. It is perfect for any culinary adventure with this sooth texture.
