This is a hardy hot breakfast that will last long throughout the day. Perfect to eat for the long day ahead for hard labor or outdoor sports. As always oatmeal is good for fighting high cholesterol and heart disease so eat up and enjoy.
First lets look at all the types of oats and how nutritious they are.
A Little Schooling On All The Types Of Oats
Who doesn’t remember their Mom making oatmeal for them on a cold winters day. Really the wonder of staying so full with Mom’s oatmeal was that it took longer to digest steel cut oats. Really, truly a Mom comfort food!
When comparing rolled oats to steel cut oats the only difference is that steel cut is longer to digest, causes less of a rise in blood sugar and they offer a chewy nutty flavor.

There are 5 different hot cooked oatmeals. Theres instant oats, rolled oats, steel cut oats, 7 minute steel cut oats and 3 minute steel cut oats. The instant oats are the most processed. They are finely ground, precooked, rehydrated and flavored with artificial and natural flavors. The rolled oats are steamed and rolled and are still good, but they may have a less effect on gut health then longer cooking steel cut oats.

A minute difference between the types of steel cut oats is that they are cut smaller and cook in a lesser amount of time. The steel cut oats are minimally processed and so they take longer to digest helping your gut health as a water soluble fiber. This helps regulate blood sugar levels, lowering harmful LDL-cholesterol and lowering the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
They are all good it’s just what your preference is for texture, health and time.
How to Make Cinnamon Apple Raisin Oatmeal with High Protein Toppers
I really like the larger steal cut oats but they take forever to cook. I love this 7 minute Steel Cut Oats by Bob Mills. It is just as textured and delicious as the long cook steel oats. Really it’s just cut smaller.
To make this Cinnamon Apple Raisin Oatmeal take a medium sauce pan and add 2 cups of water and a 1/4 tsp of salt put the lid on and boil. While it is heating peel, core and cut up a 1/2 apple of choice, I use fuji apples.

When the water is done boiling add 1 cup of the 7 minute cut oats, chopped apples, raisins, cinnamon, cardamon and turmeric. Stir and cover with a lid, turn down the heat to low and let cook for 7 minutes.

When done turn off the heat, do not take the lid off, take off the heat and let sit for 5 minutes or more. The longer it sits the more congealed it gets. This is good if you like thick oatmeal. Then serve in individual bowls and top with the high protein toppers listed below.

What Oatmeal Toppers Are The Highest In Protein
You can choose to put as little or as much as you want for these toppers. I use a variety of protein rich seeds and nuts to top this apple raisin oatmeal to balance out the carbs.
The largest amount of protein comes from the hemp seeds with 10 grams of protein per 3 tablespoons. Thats a lot of protein for a seed. Although, I only use 1 1/2 tablespoons on this oatmeal, but feel free to use as much as you like.
I love the sunflower seeds at 7 grams of protein per quarter cup and pumpkin seeds at 10 grams of protein per quarter cup. Really with one tablespoon of each your getting about 4 grams of protein.

I put flaxseed meal on top of this creation not for protein but because it is so high in fiber with 2.8 grams per tablespoon. Thats 95% fiber and 18% protein. Not to mention being high in amino acids such as omega-6 and omega-3’s, arginine and glutamine, which are great for your heart and immune system. Plus they are full of lignans that reduce the growth of hormone sensitive cancers such as uterine, breast, and prostate. So eat up on the flaxseed meal!

As for those delicious walnuts they have 4.5 grams of protein per quarter cup. Although you can use any nut that you love because they are all so good. Walnuts just go great in oatmeal. Most other nuts have more protein then walnuts. I recommend changing out nuts you eat to get more nutrients in your diet. I like pecans or hazelnut on top of this oatmeal as well.

We make this oatmeal at least three to four times a week because it’s so good. I’m still not tired of it. Besides we really watch our health with the food that we eat. This recipe is a must try if you have high cholesterol and or heart disease. I hope you like this Cinnamon Apple Raisin Oatmeal with High Protein Toppers as much as we do. Enjoy!
